STSM Volunteer Coordinator Recognized in State House Ceremony

Mary Dell Hayes was recognized Wednesday for her exceptional work as Volunteer Coordinator for Sexual Trauma Services of the Midlands (STSM), receiving the 2012 Robin Burns Volunteer Administrator Award in a State House ceremony with Governor Nikki Haley.

The award is presented annually to a staff person with a private or public agency or organization who has advanced volunteerism through demonstrated skills in the management and administration of a successful volunteer program.

Since becoming STSM's Volunteer Coordinator in September 2008, Ms. Hayes has created a Volunteer Advisory Board, strengthened volunteer/staff relations, recruited college students and non-traditional volunteers, and established a volunteer referral reward system and a volunteer perks system, such as restaurant discount packages. Ms. Hayes has doubled the number of active STSM volunteers and increased retention time for volunteers from six months to eighteen months. She works tirelessly to achieve the strategic goals of the Board of Directors and to further STSM's mission of helping survivors heal and ending sexual violence in our community.

Ms. Hayes also volunteers with Girl Scouts of America, Riverbanks Zoo, and Pawmetto Lifeline.

Governor Haley presented the 2012 South Carolina Governor's Volunteer Awards along with the South Carolina Association for Volunteer Administration (SCAVA).
