Sexual Trauma Services to Serve Sumter County

Sexual Trauma Services of the Midlands (STSM) has permanently adopted Sumter County as a new service area.  The Board of Directors voted unanimously at its August meeting to adopt Sumter County, which STSM began serving on a temporary basis in March 2011.  STSM also serves Richland, Lexington, and Newberry counties.

Since March 2011, STSM has assisted 78 survivors of sexual assault and abuse residing in Sumter County.  During this time, staff and volunteers made 34 visits to the hospital to accompany survivors, and STSM staff provided 68 survivors with crisis counseling and therapy.

STSM also helped create Sumter County’s first Sexual Assault Response Team (SART) to coordinate medical, legal, and support/psychological services for survivors.  The Sumter SART, which held its first meeting on June 8, will help ensure that survivors of sexual violence receive appropriate services and referrals that promote the safety and dignity of survivors.
