Sexual Trauma Services of the Midlands Commemorates Sexual Assault Awareness Month

The month of April has been designated as Sexual Assault Awareness Month in South Carolina as well as nationally. The goal of SAAM is to raise public awareness about sexual violence (focusing on sexual assault and rape) and to educate communities and individuals on how to prevent sexual violence.

The theme of this year’s Awareness Month is "Step Forward Together, Take a Stand Against Rape". We hope to encourage both males and females in this stand to end sexual violence. Statistics have shown that 1 in 4 women and 1 in 6 men will be sexually assaulted before the age of 18.

To address these statistics and lack of awareness Sexual Trauma Services of the Midlands is organizing several community events and activities, including:

  • Thursday, April 1: Kickoff Event at Gotham Bagel, 1508 Main St. (free entry)
  • Tuesday, April 6: Child Sexual Abuse Prevention Training (free)
  • Saturday, April 8: Mother/Daughter Rape Aggression Defense training (free)
  • Tuesday, April 13: Community Partner Appreciation (invite only)
  • Wednesday, April 14: Walk a Mile in Her Shoes ($10)
  • Monday, April 19: 6th Annual "Tee It Up for STSM" Golf Tournament
  • Wednesday, April 21: Denim Day – Wear jeans to raise awareness that tight jeans are no welcome sign!
  • Saturday, April 24: Child Sexual Abuse Prevention Training (free)

Register for these events online. Sexual Assault Awareness Month is a specific time we focus on the issues of sexual assault, but everyday provides a new opportunity for communities to stop sexual assault.

April 2010's SAAM Theme is "Step Forward Together, Take a Stand Against Rape"
