Midlands Men Strut in Heels to End Sexual Violence

COLUMBIA, SC - Men from across the Midlands will be standing up against sexual assault and abuse, one pair of heels at a time, on Thursday, April 18, 2013. The 4th annual Walk a Mile in Her Shoes, hosted by Sexual Trauma Services of the Midlands (STSM), begins at 6 p.m. outside the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center in the Vista. Men, women, and children of all ages are invited to participate, individually or in teams.

Walk a Mile in Her Shoes encourages men to get involved in the fight against sexual violence. The event also raises awareness about the free, local services STSM provides for survivors of sexual assault and abuse. It is one of several events held throughout April, Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM).

South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson will once again lead the walk, joined by Columbia Mayor Steve Benjamin, Sumter County Sheriff Anthony Dennis, Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott, Lexington County Sheriff James Metts, Springdale Police Chief Kevin Cornett, West Columbia Police Chief Dennis Tyndall, Representative Mia McLeod, and Deputy Solicitor Dan Goldberg.

Registration is $15 until March 30, $20 until noon on April 18, and $30 at the event and can be purchased at http://wam2013.eventbrite.com/ or by mail. The event is free for children 12 and under. All proceeds will go to supporting survivors and prevention education programs across the Midlands.
