Get Pumped Up For The Fifth Annual Walk a Mile in Her Shoes, Community Partner Awards And The After-After Party Featuring Eric Hutchinson at Tin Roof

COLUMBIA, SC—Men and women from across the Midlands will join together to stand up against sexual assault and abuse at the fifth annual “Walk a Mile In Her Shoes” on April 17, 2014.  Registration begins at the South Carolina State House at 5:30 p.m. The walk starts at 6:30 pm, and the after party at Tin Roof begins at 8:00 pm. On Friday, April 18, The Tin Roof and 92.1 The Palm will host singer-songwriter Eric Hutchinson for an after-after party. Hutchinson will play five songs around 12:30pm. Tickets are $5 at the door and all proceeds benefit STSM.

Attorney General Alan Wilson will serve as the Grand Marshal for the walk. Local band Daddy Lion will play during walk registration. After the walk STSM will present the Community Partner Awards. These awards are presented annually to groups and individuals who go above and beyond in their efforts to help survivors and prevent sexual violence. Honorees include Three Rivers Behavioral Health, Captain Lancy Melton of the Richland County Sheriff’s Department Special Victims Unit, Cayce Department of Public Safety, and the Tapp’s Arts Center. The Volunteer of the Year Award will go to advocate and University of South Carolina student Ellison Kirby. Guy Bradley of SCANA will receive the Board Member of the Year Award.

Sexual Trauma Services of the Midlands (STSM) organizes Walk a Mile in Her Shoes every year as a fundraiser to support survivors of sexual violence in our community. Men and boys don heels and platform shoes for the walk to get a sense of what survivors experience navigating legal and medical systems after an assault and also dealing with the personal trauma resulting from an assault. Women and children participate as well and all can register to walk in teams or as individuals.  Registration is free for children 12 and under.

STSM Executive Director Ginny Waller says, “We are thrilled to have close to 1,000 community members come out for this event to support Sexual Trauma Services of the Midlands' work to end sexual violence.”

A media tent will be located to the right of the State House steps on Main Street and a representative will be available to assist with media inquiries throughout the event. For more information on “Walk a Mile in Her Shoes” or to form your team, go to Men are encouraged to wear heels and information on obtaining shoes can be found at
