We Care Elementary© - Elementary School Children (3rd-5th Grade)

Sexual Trauma Services of the Midlands offers We Care Elementary© to schools and youth-focused organizations in Richland, Lexington, Newberry, Sumter, and Clarendon counties. We Care Elementary© is a primary prevention program targeting 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students, their educators, and their parents/caregivers. The goal of We Care Elementary© is to prevent sexual victimization and promote healthy relationships and behaviors in children.

Adopted from Prevent Child Abuse Vermont, our approach to prevention includes the following core concepts:

  • Adults are primarily responsible for protecting children and adolescents form abuse;
  • Violence can be prevented through skill-based, developmentally targeted health promotion with students in the classroom;
  • Comprehensive prevention includes bystander engagement; and
  • Consideration for the impact of trauma and past victimization is critical when engaging in child sexual abuse prevention with individuals across the age spectrum.

All aspects of the We Care Elementary© Program are tied to these key principles, ensuring that there are consistent messages in various settings (home, school, and community). With that, We Care Elementary© is made up of the following components:

  • All sessions are offered by a carefully trained facilitator from STSM;
  • A curriculum for 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students;
  • Training for school staff on child sexual abuse and prevention; and
  • Parent/caregiver engagement tools and session.

The curriculum meets National Health and Safety Education Standards, and all education materials are in accordance with the South Carolina Department of Education as an awareness and prevention service provider.
