December Faith Leaders Training

As we go through life, many of us experience traumatic events that impact our spiritual journey. Some wounds are visible, while others (like sexual violence) are hidden but still cause a survivor to struggle with how they see themselves, interact with others, and view the world around them. Experiencing sexual assault/abuse can also create questions and changes in the survivor's beliefs about their faith and faith community.  1 in 4 women and 1 in 6 men have experienced sexual violence as a child or as an adult--but it doesn’t have to be that way.  As leaders in our community, we would like faith leaders to join with Sexual Trauma Services of the Midlands to help make Richland and Lexington Counties a sanctuary from sexual violence. Together we can protect children and walk alongside in support of those who are healing from the hidden wounds of sexual violence.

Throughout 2016, STSM is hosting a series of FREE trainings for faith leaders that include the following components:

  • Stewards of Children, an evidence based child sexual abuse prevention curriculum developed by Darkness to Light
  • Healing the Hidden Wounds, a training on how to respond to disclosures of sexual assault and abuse and support survivors in their healing journey

Due to support from the Parrish Family Foundation, we are offering a final session of this training on Thursday, December 8 in Columbia, SC.

Note: if you attended trainings in this series in August or September 2016, this is a repeat of the same training. Please feel free to share with others!

Tell us about the faith organization you are part of! Are you associated with a particular religious tradition or denomination? Is it a church, synagogue, mosque, study group, outreach ministry, religious school, interfaith group, etc?
This training is intended for faith leaders only--parts of the training will focus on organization policies and changes that could only be made by those in a leadership role. However, leaders could be clergy or lay leaders, and multiple leaders from the same congregation or community are welcome to attend so that they can work together throughout the training and while implementing follow up.
