Self Care is Hard

At STSM we talk a lot about self-care. The importance of putting on your own mask before helping others. One thing we don’t always talk about is how hard self-care can be. It’s challenging to step away from the never-ending lists and demands of life and turn off the little voice in your head that tells you all the things you should be doing.

My favorite example of people fully leaning into self-care are Donna and Tom on the sitcom Parks and Rec. Each year they celebrate Treat Your Self day. A day to indulge in all your favorite self-care activities. They never question that they deserve this day. They never worry about what someone would think about them taking a day to do only what they want to do.

I want to give you (and me!) permission to turn off the voice and scrap the list and take some time to TREAT YO SELF. Because we are worth it! We deserve a day off to rest and rejuvenate and we will come back better and stronger.

Please accept this official challenge to Treat Yo Self. Make a plan. I’m committing to taking this Saturday off. I’m not going to check email, I’m not going to study for school. I’m taking the day to spend time with my family and to enjoy the beautiful fall weather (and also watch Scandal). What are you going to do?
