Meet Volunteer Nova

Sexual Trauma Services of the Midlands had a big week!  You read last week about Sarah who won United Way of the Midland's Community Impact Volunteer of the Year Award.  This week we want to introduce you to Nova.  Nova was presented with the South Carolina Governor's Legacy Award for Volunteerism.  This award is presented annually to a volunteer who has committed at least 15 years of exceptional service to volunteerism.  It is easy to see why Nova won this award!

Nova has volunteered with STSM  since 1994 in every capacity possible.  Nova started as an advocate and has since served  as an office volunteer, Speakers Bureau volunteer, and special events volunteer.  Nova has spent close to 12,000 on call and more than 3,000 hours directly working with survivors.  After Nova retired her advocacy cape, she became a key part of our Speakers Bureau.  She annually spends close to fifty hours reaching out to make sure our community knows about the services STSM provides.  We are not the only organization to recognize how special Nova's service is!  In 2003 Nova received United Way’s Dedication to Service Award and in 2007 she received the South Carolina Victim Assistance Network’s Volunteer of the Year award.  Nova is a talented knitter and knits for several community projects.  Nova even taught the STSM staff to knit!
