Meet Volunteer Advocate Sarah Collins!

Tell me a little bit about yourself:  I am 21 years old and attend CIU.  I graduate in May!!!  I am looking to go to graduate school to get a masters degree in I don’t know what yet.  After graduation I am planning on going to Ethiopia for six months to work with an organization that runs a home for women who have been exploited and abused.  I have volunteered at STSM since August.

Why did you start volunteering?  I started volunteering because of the work the agency does and to get hands on experience working with survivors.

What do you like about volunteering at STSM?  I like the opportunity to get to know the staff and contributing to the team.  I love that the staff is so down to earth and unified in their work.  They are really good at providing volunteers with all the resources they need and letting other people help in the important work they do.

What would you tell someone who is thinking about volunteering at STSM?  I would tell them it’s a really good opportunity.  I would tell them to be prepared to be challenged and to be humbled and to be ready to be selfless in helping someone else.

How do you think this volunteer opportunity will equip you for your future?  This provides an opportunity for me to be in a real situation with real survivors and to gain field experience which is really valuable when looking for jobs.  I feel like I have an upper hand because I’ve gotten to do real work instead of just book work.
