STSM has provided consistent services to survivors of sexual assault and abuse in the Midlands for 26 years. But I bet there are some things you don’t know about us. The Quality of Service STSM consists of nine full-time highly educated and professional staff, three part-time graduate level interns, and countless volunteers. The counselors are licensed social workers or professional counselors with backgrounds in post traumatic stress disorder and drug and alcohol counseling. These folks care passionately about the survivors. They respond to 2 AM hospital calls, return home at 7 AM, and then head to work. They do this because they believe in the power of crisis intervention to save a life. They do this because a survivor says, “I can’t believe you value me enough to sit here all night.” The Numbers Will Shock You
provide individual counseling, or help a survivor fill out SOVA reimbursement forms. For less than it costs dinner for two, we provide a group therapy session, accompany a survivor to the police station to fill out a report, or assist a survivor in finding housing. The Future STSM’s future has never looked brighter. The United Way recently accepted us into their Partners In Compassion Institute, which will provide us with assistance in board governance, formation of a strategic plan, and defining measurable outcomes within the volunteer program. Staff is also seeking funding for a parttime Bilingual Victim Advocate to assist with outreach and provide direct services to the Hispanic/Latino community. In July, STSM will host its first Darkness to Light Stewards of Children training. Our goal is to educate 20,000 adults over a five year period to prevent, recognize, and react responsibly to child sexual abuse. When I decided in 2007 to make a career change, STSM was the logical choice for me. I work with amazingly talented men and women who care passionately about helping victims of crime, and I get to see the drastic, positive impact our services have on survivors. I cannot put into words how fortunate I feel being named the Executive Director. I finally have the career I only dreamed was possible.
