Meeting the Needs of Underserved Survivors of Sexual Violence

Join us in Newberry at the Hal Kohn Memorial Library on March 30, 2012, for a FREE day long training about responding to underserved survivors of sexual assault, with an emphasis on rural and Hispanic/Latino communities

Intended Audience: social workers, advocates, medical personnel, and law enforcement

Objectives: At the end of this training, participants will be able to…

  • Define the spectrum of sexual violence
  • List the effects of sexual violence, including symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
  • Explain manifestation of sexual violence in the rural and Latino communities, including the needs and barriers experienced by survivors of sexual violence in those populations
  • Understand cultural competence, specifically one’s own beliefs and how that manifests itself in the work that he/she does and its effects on survivors
  • Identify evidence-based practices that will best serve rural and Latino survivors of sexual violence

3:00 – 4:30          Evidence-Based Practices: Working with Rural and Latino Survivors of Sexual Violence - Anna Walton, Sexual Trauma Services of the Midlands

Additional Information:

  • 5 VSP, CLEE, LMFT, LPC, and non-contact SW hours have been approved
  • The Hal Kohn Memorial Library is located at 1100 Friend Street, Newberry, SC 29108
  • You may not bring food or drinks (other than bottled water) into the facilities. Please keep this in mind so that you may get your morning coffee and drink it before the training starts
  • The training agenda provides participants with an hour during which they can go out for lunch on their own as food will not be provided at the training and is not permitted in the training facilities. Participants will be provided with a list of restaurants close to the training facilities where they may go for lunch
  • Bring a sweater! The training facilities are held at a cool temperature
