Board Member of the Quarter Guy Bradley Guy M. Bradley is an Information Technology (IT) Director for SCANA Corporation, responsible for overseeing the implementation, maintenance and support of software needed for the construction and operation of three nuclear units at the V.C. Summer Nuclear Station. Guy joined STSM’s Board in May 2008 and serves as its Vice President and the Board Development and Special Events Chair. Last year, he oversaw the transition to Quickbooks, recommended additional best practice policies, and investigated alternative investment options. He also planned the 2012 “Tee It Up for STSM” golf tournament. Most importantly, Guy rarely misses an STSM event or Board meeting. "Guy has shown critical leadership in the board's financial monitoring activities. In addition, he has been a principal cog in the increasing success of the annual golf tournament, which is our biggest fundraiser. We greatly appreciate Guy's dedication to the mission of Sexual Trauma Services of the Midlands." - Jason Bradley, President, STSM Board of Directors

Volunteer of the Quarter Sarah Moran Sarah Moran has volunteered with STSM as an advocate for six years and won our Volunteer of the Year award in 2010. The Ohio native and USC Honors College graduate has spent more than 3,500 hours on call since 2006. Sarah will graduate this May with a dual Masters degree in Public Health and Social Work. She has worked with the SC Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy, Jewish Family Services, and the Waverly After School Tutoring Program. On April 19, Sarah received the United Way of the Midlands Community Impact Award, given to a person or group that demonstrates a commitment to volunteerism and has made an impact to causes, programs, or projects that support human service needs in the Midlands. “Sarah’s dedication to STSM’s mission is inspiring. She is passionate about advocacy for survivors of sexual violence. Sarah always goes the extra mile to ensure that her survivor receives the best possible care in the hospital.” Mary Dell Hayes, Volunteer Services Coordinator
DENIM DAY
When: Wednesday, April 25 Why: In 1992 in Italy, an 18year-old was forcefully raped by her 45-year-old driving instructor. The assailant was arrested, convicted, and sentenced to jail. He appealed, and in 1999 Italy’s Supreme Court quashed his conviction on the grounds that “it is nearly impossible to slip off tight jeans even partly without the active collaboration of the person who is wearing them,” thus assuming the sexual intercourse was consensual. The day after the ruling, female politicians protested before the Italian parliament, wearing jeans and holding placards that read, “Jeans: An Alibi for Rape.” What: Please wear jeans on this day to raise awareness and educate the public about rape and sexual assault. STSM is giving out stickers to participating individuals, schools, and businesses. More info: Kayce Singletary at pec@stsm.org

Education & Outreach
STSM’s Community Education and Outreach Program is garnering national recognition, notably for its work focused on prevention. The Jan/Feb 2012 Sexual Assault Report featured an article by Katie Reid and Jacqlyn Baylis, former and present Community Education Coordinators, respectively. They describe STSM’s popular Youth Violence Prevention Program (YVPP), a six-lesson curriculum for middle and high school aged youth that sheds light on the root causes of violence and empowers young people to make positive change in their communities.
Ginny Waller with Hannah Horne of WIS
They write, “The old approach of teaching women to defend Spotlight: Prevention themselves against violence is futile. Instead, STSM challenges unequal systems and looks at the overarching reason for why violence is allowed to happen. By doing this, we are encouraging our communities to be active leaders in preventing further violence.” STSM also has been invited to present at the 2012 National Sexual Assault Conference in Chicago. Jacqlyn and Kayce Singletary, STSM’s Prevention Education Coordinator, will facilitate a workshop called “The Two Way Mirror,” which will stress the importance of establishing partnerships with organizations that focus on teen pregnancy prevention. The workshop will encourage participants to rethink the true definition of primary prevention, while considering the overlap between sexual assault and teen pregnancy. Art Therapy Group
“One important aspect of art therapy is the creation of a safe space where traumatic feelings can be processed. Sometimes the verbal skill is lacking to describe traumatic experiences and by creating art, the person can feel more confident.” (Breat)
STSM provided 35 group sessions to 96 clients in Lexington and Richland counties from Jan. to March. A grant from The Parrish Family Foundation has allowed STSM to add yoga, art, and (coming soon) animal-assisted therapy to its Group Services Program this year. Art therapy for teens and young adults occurs weekly, with the next 6week session beginning in late April. It is taught by Lyssa Harvey, a teacher, therapist, & artist who owns The Art and Play Therapy Center of South Carolina. More info: Kyra Hufford at gsc@stsm.org or 803-790-8208.
