Volunteer Advocates Volunteer Advocates help in different ways: they help reduce the trauma a survivor experiences from an attempted or completed sexual assault; they provide emotional support and information to survivors, family members and friends. Volunteer Advocates also provide information to help a survivor understand sexual assault, police procedures, the sexual assault examination, legal process, counseling opportunities and other service providers. Volunteer Advocates provide 24-hour crisis hotline counseling and they accompany survivors of sexual assault to the hospital and provide information and support. Volunteer Advocates are responsible for keeping accurate records and submitting report forms to the STS office within 24 hours of shift. Volunteer Advocates must have access to reliable transportation. Training: 24.5 hours of training is required and provided by STS. The minimum age is 18 years old. The next training will be held: June 17th - 23rd, 2008. The application deadline in June 1, 2008. Commitment: A 1-year time commitment is required. Volunteer Advocates are required to be on-call for at least two shifts a month. Volunteer Advocates are also required to attend two 8- hour Continuing Education Training Sessions per year.
